WEB SITE SHOWCASE

The Web sites listed below come from the thousands of submissions we've received to our request for "killer Web sites." Our intent is to highlight sites that provide you with new ideas, inspiration, and examples for your own Web sites. Thanks to those of you who have submitted sites. We will continue to highlight more of them in upcoming issues.

  LAZAR SCIENCE PROGRAM
We like this Web site because it demonstrates how educators use FrontPage to share what goes on in their classroom with parents, students, and peers. Using FrontPage 98, Mrs. Dziekanowski, the Eighth Grade Science teacher at Robert R. Lazar Middle School, has created an engaging and informative site that is enhanced with features like Themes and the discussion Web.

  GET IN PRINT
This online seller of custom silk-screened apparel uses FrontPage 98 to create and manage a clever Web site that allows visitors to order custom printing on hats, t-shirts, bags, and a variety of other merchandise. This site is large, commerce-enabled, and makes great use of forms.

  TEXAS JUDGE
Many of the submissions we receive are from organizations that have used FrontPage to create a Web site as an information clearinghouse for their organization. The Texas Judge is a good example of a well-crafted site that is regularly updated. The site provides resources to members of the Texas judiciary as well as those visitors interested in finding out about the goings-on of the Texas court system.

If you would like to nominate your site for Killer Web Site, you can send e-mail to [email protected].

FRONTPAGE TIPS AND TRICKS

WORKING WITH DISCUSSION GROUPS IN FRONTPAGE 98
A discussion Web can be a powerful addition to any Web site. For an initial investment of time on your part, a discussion Web can provide your site with continuously changing content that gets visitors involved and drives increased traffic to your site. We explore the FrontPage discussion Web feature in this new article and give you some pointers on maintaining the Web on a long-term basis.

ZDJOURNALS TIP: QUICKLY REPLICATE NAVIGATION BARS
If you've set up a navigation bar in your top shared border, you can easily replicate that navigation bar in your bottom shared border. Just right-click on the navigation bar and choose Copy from the shortcut menu. Then, right-click in the bottom border and choose Paste.

You might not want to have two identical navigation bars on the same page, of course, but you could set the second bar up to display text buttons instead of icons. To do so, just double-click it and choose Text in the Orientation and Appearance panel.

You can then adjust the font size of these text links, which gives a really nice lower page navigation tool, similar to many professional sites today. This works especially well if you have a long page. And of course both bars stay in sync with any navigation changes you make to the page.

FRONTPAGE NEWS

PATCH NOW AVAILABLE FOR USERS OF FRONTPAGE PERSONAL WEB SERVER http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/Articles/PersWeb.htm

Microsoft has released a patch to remedy a potential security vulnerability that has recently come to our attention and affects certain versions of the FrontPage Personal Web Server. This issue DOES NOT affect the Microsoft Personal Web Server that ships with FrontPage 98, FrontPage 97, FrontPage 1.1, or the Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, and Windows NT operating systems. The security problem only affects servers being used as a live server running Windows 95 or Windows 98. (Windows NT-based systems are not affected.) This potential problem affects a small number of users, as FrontPage Personal Web Server is not installed by default in FrontPage 98. Find out more information about this patch at the Web page listed above.

WEB SITE SHOWCASE

The Web sites listed below come from the thousands of submissions we've received to our request for "killer Web sites." Our intent is to highlight sites that will provide you with new ideas, inspiration, and examples for your own Web sites. Thanks to those of you who have submitted sites. We will continue to highlight more of them in upcoming issues.

--THE WORLEYBUGGERFLY COMPANY
http://www.worleybuggerflyco.com

See how this fly fishing outfitter sells everything from waterwisp flies to waders from this FrontPage-based Web site. This site also shows how to use frames pages to assist in navigating a site with a lot of information on a variety of subjects.

--OTTAWA GOLF
http://www.ottawagolf.com/

Golfers in and around Canada's capital city of Ottawa, Ontario, can visit this very large FrontPage-based Web site to find everything from golf jokes to weather conditions and classified ads (which users may also submit via a FrontPage-based form).

--DENTON FAMILY GENEALOGY
http://www.acun.com/dentons

If you're a Denton, think you may be a Denton, or just want to know more about the Dentons, check out the Denton genealogy Web site. Entirely created and maintained with Microsoft FrontPage and Microsoft ImageComposer, the site has had almost 50,000 hits in less than a year. It has been featured on a CBS television affiliate in Los Angeles as an outstanding example of a genealogy Web site.

FRONTPAGE TIPS AND TRICKS

ASK A SIMPLE QUESTION . . .
http://www.microsoft.com/workshop/languages/fp/tutorial98/topics.asp

Many of the questions we receive from users ask us for information on how to perform simple site-creation tasks using FrontPage. To these users, we recommend checking out the Topics List for the FrontPage tutorial, where you'll find articles like "How to import images," "Creating a table," and "Replacing text on all pages."

EMBEDDING FONTS IN YOUR WEB PAGES
http://www.microsoft.com/workshop/languages/fp/design/mfp9935.asp

If you're a designer, you've probably been frustrated at times by the Web's limitation in handling fonts. In this article, we show you how to embed copies of the fonts you want to use within your Web site. When you do so, Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 (and later versions) will use those embedded font copies to display your text accurately. Other browsers will simply ignore the embedded-font instructions and continue to use a default font.

ZDJOURNALS TIP: EDITING YOUR SHARED BORDERS

Have you ever tried to edit the HTML code in one of the shared borders in FrontPage 98? At first glance, this code is inaccessible. If you look at the HTML of a page that includes a shared border, you won't find what you're looking for.

To edit the shared border's HTML, go to FrontPage Explorer and choose Web Settings from the Tools menu. Click the Advanced tab and then select the Show Documents In Hidden Directories check box. Click OK to continue. FrontPage will refresh the display, and you'll see a new directory called _borders. Inside, you'll find an HTML page that corresponds to each border you've enabled: top.htm, bottom.htm, left.htm, and/or right.htm. You can open and edit each of these files in FrontPage Editor.

PATCH TO BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR USERS OF FRONTPAGE PERSONAL WEB SERVER (FPWS)
http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/Articles/PersWeb.htm

Microsoft will release a patch to remedy a potential security vulnerability that has recently come to our attention and affects certain versions of the FrontPage Personal Web Server (FPWS). This potential security vulnerability could allow a hacker to access any file on the Personal Web Server if the hacker correctly guesses the file name and uses a non-standard URL. The security problem does not affect the Microsoft Personal Web Server (PWS) that ships with FrontPage 98, FrontPage 97, FrontPage 1.1, or the Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, and Windows NT operating systems. The security problem only affects servers being used as a live server running Windows 95 or Windows 98. (Windows NT-based systems are not affected.) Since the FrontPage Personal Web Server is not installed by default in FrontPage 98, this potential problem affects a small number of users. You can find out how to tell which Personal Web Server you are running, and find out more about the patch, at the Web page listed above.

FRONTPAGE TIPS AND TRICKS

IMPROVING YOUR KEYWORD "DENSITY"
http://www.microsoft.com/workshop/languages/fp/dev/density.asp

In addition to the "keywords" meta tag described in a previous article, search engines also look at the placement of your keywords elsewhere on your Web pages. Generally, they look at the "description" meta tag, the "title" tag, and the content of your Web pages. Each search engine has its own way of analyzing the placement of your key words and key concepts in your page and its own way of evaluating the resulting "keyword density." In this article you will see how you can optimize your keyword density.

ADDING A SEARCH FORM TO YOUR WEB
http://www.microsoft.com/workshop/languages/fp/dev/search.asp

How do people find things on the Web? At portal sites like the MSN, there are two main ways: navigating through a directory or typing in keywords. So, how do people find things on your Web site? FrontPage makes it easy. It has a built-in search feature that you can use to add a search form to your pages quickly. We examine this feature in this article.

GET ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS THROUGH THE FRONTPAGE NEWSGROUPS
http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/newsgroups/newsFrontPage.htm

We receive numerous e-mails from users of FrontPage asking for help on all sorts of FrontPage-related topics. While we do our best to create articles that answer the most common of these questions, we unfortunately can't get to all of them. If you don't find answers to your questions on the Site Builder Network Web site, at http://www.microsoft.com/workshop/languages/fp, there is another option--the peer-to-peer newsgroups for FrontPage. Users of all skill levels participate in the newsgroups to spread their FrontPage know-how. And who knows, you may be able to help someone else as well.

NEW FRONTPAGE ARTICLE

MAKE YOUR WEB SITE EARN ITS KEEP

http://www.microsoft.com/workshop/languages/fp/manage/befree.asp

Did you know that many online retailers, including barnesandnoble.com and FogDog Sports, are eager to promote their products on your Web site? So eager, in fact, that many are willing to give you a cut of any sales generated as a result of the link from your Web site. See how it's done by visiting the Web page listed above.

FRONTPAGE TIPS AND TRICKS

WATCH YOUR SPEED!

http://www.microsoft.com/workshop/languages/fp/design/mfp9915.asp

Those of us who are blessed with high-speed Internet connections--or who spend our time editing local copies of our FrontPage-based Web sites--can sometimes forget that most people still access the Internet over 28.8 Kbps (or slower) modems. As a result, we tend to create pages that take too long to load thereby aggravating visitors to our Web sites. See what you can do to improve your site download times by visiting the Web page listed above.

TIP: USING ALT TEXT TO ANNOTATE YOUR IMAGES
FrontPage automatically annotates each image you place in your Web pages with its corresponding file name (such as filename.gif). This allows a visitor who has turned off the browser's ability to render images to see alternative text, or "alt text", in place of the image. It's also critical to use alt text on your images so that vision impaired users who use Web page readers can get a description of the image on your page. You may also want to replace the file name with something more informative like "Click here to proceed" or "Picture of my product" that gives the user a better idea of what she can expect by clicking on the image area.

To change the alt text, simply right click on the image and select Image Properties from the menu. Under the general tab of the image properties dialog box, find the section called Alternative Representation. It is here under the field labeled "Text" that you can replace the file name with your custom annotation. Then just click OK and save the page. Make sure that the text is not too long to fit in the area allowed by the image.

POWERUSER TIP: PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY WITH A SCREENSAVER SHORTCUT

For those who deal with highly confidential information, privacy can become a major concern. You can save your work from prying eyes by creating a shortcut key that will activate your screensaver immediately. To do so you must first create a shortcut to your current screensaver on your desktop. Right-click on your desktop and select New/Shortcut. Next, click on the Browse button and under the Files of type list select All Files. Locate the .SCR file in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder that corresponds to your current screen saver and click Open. Finally, click on the Next button, accept the default name for the shortcut, and click Finish. In order to create a keyboard shortcut, right-click the screen saver icon on your desktop, select Properties and click the Shortcut tab. Place your cursor in the Shortcut key text box and type the letter that you would like associated with this shortcut. Windows 95 will automatically place a [Ctrl] + [Alt] in front of the letter. Finally, select the Apply button and then the OK button. You may now immediately activate your screen saver at any time by using the keyboard shortcut or by double clicking on the shortcut on your desktop.
